A unique exhibition at The Lowry gives viewers a remarkable insight into photojournalism over the last 100 years.
When the editor of The Manchester Guardian appointed the paper’s first staff photographer, Walter Doughty, little did he know that a hundred years later, The Guardian would have such an illustrious history for photography. Since 1908, The Guardian has been publishing images that have grown into a unique pictorial record incorporating key moments in history alongside innovation in photographic styles and techniques. Now a new exhibition at The Lowry has brought together over 100 of the most striking and important images taken by The Guardian staff photographers.
A Long Exposure – 100 Years of Guardian Photography includes work from seven Manchester-based Guardian photographers: Walter Doughty, Tom Stuttard, Bob Smithies, Graham Finlayson, Neil Libbert, Don McPhee and Denis Thorpe, who has acted as curator for the exhibition. Among the many memorable images are photographs of German prisoners of war at Handforth Prisoner of War Camp, a striking portrait of hostage Brian Keenan on his release and an aerial view of a First World War battlefield.
