Lemn Sissay at Orlandos 12 Oct 2008

One of Manchester's most famous poets appears at the Chorlton venue for an evening of poetry, comedy and songs.

Even if you do not recognise his name, chances are that you are familiar with some of Lemn Sissay's work. His poetry is displayed throughout Manchester on the sides of buildings such as Hardy's Well or carved into paving slabs stretching the length of Tib Street in the Northern Quarter.

However, far from being an urban graffiti poet, Lemn Sissay is highly respected around the world for his poetry, scripts and documentaries. He first moved to Manchester at the age of 18 and quickly took a post as a literature development worker at Commonword before publishing his first collection. By 24 he was touring his poetry around the world, having struck a chord with his insightful treatment of issues such as race, identity and family.

He is now acting as an artist in residence at the Southbank Centre, where his Poems as Landmarks series has continued this theme of poetry and public art. By the end of this year he will also have published a new collection of poetry and sailed the Arctic on a ship full of artists...

The event will see him perform his work and take questions from the audience, and a meal is included in the £27 ticket price.
