An Ideal Husband at Royal Exchange

Oscar Wilde's classic tale of comedy, morality and sexual politics brings a festive sparkle to the Royal Exchange.

This perfect festive offering is a dazzling blend of comedy, morality, sex and politics which explores human frailty and social hypocrisy. Wilde uses his signature wit and style to delve beneath the elegant sheen of Edwardian London Society to reveal a bitter undercurrent of deception.

Sir Robert Chiltern is the ideal husband - or so his wife believes. But a beautiful dinner guest – the infamous scarlet woman Mrs Cheveley - arrives with a secret about his past that sets in motion events that could lead to blackmail, scandal, or the end of a marriage.

The production is directed by Braham Murray, whose previous Royal Exchange Theatre successes with Oscar Wilde include productions of The Importance of Being Earnest- which sold out and extended its run in 2004 - and Lady Windemere's Fan which transferred to the West End.

The cast includes Olivier Award winner Joanna Riding as Mrs Cheveley; Simon Robson as Sir Robert Chiltern; Rae Hendrie, as Lady Chiltern; Milo Twomey, as Lord Goring and Jeffrey Wickham who returns to the theatre as the Earl of Caversham – fifteen years after he played the same role in the RET’s previous production of the same play.
