Hailed as the theatrical event of our generation, Stephen Daldry’s An Inspector Calls is a must-see show.
In 1992, Stephen Daldry presided over the opening night of An Inspector Calls at the Royal National Theatre. The combined impact of his direction, Ian MacNeil’s groundbreaking set and JB Priestley’s iconic script was an immediate and unmitigated success.
In it, we see a family whose façade of decency is shattered when an inspector arrives during a dinner to investigate the death of a young woman. Exploring questions of morality, personal responsibility and perceptions of truth, the play draws heavily from the period of post-WW2 society in which it is set – however, it continues to pose dark and revelant questions for today’s society.
Daldry himself is now enjoying huge success as the director of films such as The Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot, but his production has lost none of its taut brilliance. Over the years it has won more major theatrical awards than any other show in English history. As the production embarks on its national tour, critics still hail it as ‘a work of great directoral daring, breathtaking visual invention and passionate moral urgency’ (Daily Telegraph). Don’t miss the opportunity to see one of the greatest plays of our time as it visits The Lowry this May.
