The winners of the Manchester Blog Awards 2007 have been announced...
If you are still struggling under the illusion that bloggers are a bunch of nerdy, socially inept geeks, one look at the 80-strong audience at the Manchester Blog Awards would quickly have changed your mind. Matt and Phred's (which had agreed to be the venue of the awards ceremony after Moho Live failed to go live) hummed with lively banter as the bloggers, most of them in their late twenties and thirties, caught up and exchanged gossip. They may spend an inordinate amount of time in front of their computers, but somehow they've managed to create a community.
The evening's entertainment began with a welcome from Kate Feld, who is fast becoming as well-known for her work promoting blogging as for being the voice of The Manchizzle, an arts, culture, media and politics blog that has received praise from the Guardian. Readings from Day of Moustaches, Airport Diaries, Free Man in Preston and Caroline Smailes were all well received. Elizabeth Baines read the final chapter of her blogstory, which was commissioned by Manchester Literature Festival and allowed people to vote for the outcome at the end of each chapter.
The award-winning blogs are:
Best Personal Blog: Single Mother on the Verge
Best New Blog: Renter Girl
Best Arts and Culture Blog: Mancubist
Best Political Blog: Politaholic
Best Writing on a Blog: Day of Moustaches
