Breakin' Convention 09 at The Lowry 30th May
In Dance
Archived: This event was in 2009.
The biggest hip hop dance showcase in the UK comes to The Lowry.
Hip hop dance started out as a means of expression for the disaffected black youth of inner-city America, and has since become a worldwide phenomenon. Now Breakin' Conventions will bring together three of the hottest hip hop dance performers in the world alongside five local dance crews in an extraordinary showcase of talent.
Leading the way is Ken Swift, who has been one of the foremost B Boys in the world for the last 30 years, bringing his unique style to millions through appearances in films such as Flashdance, Style Wars and Beat Street.
He is joined by Salah, the ‘Charlie Chaplin of hip hop'. This French performer rose to fame after his appearance on the French TV show Incroyable Talent, but has been a staple of the hip hop dance scene for many years with his popping, locking, breaking and freestyle.
Breakin' Convention will also host MyoSung, a world-famous Korean dance troupe. They will present The Revolution Will Not Be Institutionalised, a startlingly political piece that reflects hip hop's revolutionary roots in a modern context.
These international performers will be joined by five local crews, chosen out of 25 to reflect the best in north-west talent. Mancunian crews Floor Riders, Street Dance Zone, Shock Out and the inimitable Company Fierce will be joined by Warrington heroes Deep Heat Crew.
