Archived: This event was in 2009.
Jem Southam unveils an exhibition retracing Lowry’s footsteps along the Cumbrian coastline.
Two years in the making, this spectacular series of photographs sees nationally renowned photographer Jem Southam explore the balance between nature and man's intervention along the coast of Cumbria, tracing cycles of decay and renewal as he follows in the footsteps of LS Lowry.
The exhibition includes images from Maryport, Whitehaven, Workington, Sellafield and Barrow-in-Furness taken over many months and developed using the artist’s unusual technique of contrasting enlargements and contact sheets to create a sense of intimacy and immediacy. The exhibition also reflects the input of LS Lowry expert Lindsay Brooks, science writer Richard Hamblyn, art historian Nick Alfrey, poet Harriet Tarlo and critic David Chandler.
Clouds Descending is a rare chance to examine the beauty and desolation of our region’s coastline through the eyes of one of Britain’s leading photographers.
