Courteeners

Following their sell-out gig in October, The Courteeners announce a new date in Manchester.

When the NME reviewed The Courteeners' release Cavorting, they were salivating so much that it's a wonder the paper didn't dissolve into a soggy mess of hyperbole and inkstains. Go on any indie music forum in Manchester and you're bound to find people arguing over whether the band is the single best thing to happen to the Manchester music scene since Oasis or just a group of arrogant, posturing wannabes. Get down to one of the band's gigs and you'll see fans so devoted that they're verging on rabid.

The Courteeners are going places.

The band is fronted by Liam Fray, who had already built up quite a reputation for his ascerbic pop-punk songs after a few years on the circuit as a solo act, before forming a band with the lads he had grown up with in Middleton. He insists that The Courteeners are different because they're not trying to be part of some cool indie clique - they're just a bunch of lads who like making music and doing their thing.

But whether they're trying to fit in or not, the band go perfectly with the new indie bands around at the moment, combining the energy and lightness of the Libertines with the real-life lyrics of the London scene and more than a whiff of Morrisey to keep things Northern.

After their October date at Academy 2 sold out in days, the band have just announced that they are to play the Ritz on December 13th. Tickets are likely to go quickly so get in there before they sell out again...
