Ed Pien transforms a gallery into a haunting exploration of the space between the visible and invisible.
Toronto-based artist Ed Pien has become increasingly well-known for his multi-faceted installations. He creates ethereal landscapes through a combination of different materials including drawing, video, sound, sculpture and paper cuttings.
His latest work, Memento, builds on work started during his residency at Chinese Arts Centre last year as part of the Breathe programme. His haunting walk-through installation sees the gallery transformed into a world of shifting perceptions, where mirrors reflect floating projections among intricate floor to ceiling paper cuts and acetate sculptures.
The piece explores the various connotations of the word ghost, making connections between intangibility, the supernatural and the experiences of illegal Chinese (known as ‘ghosts' by the Chinese community). The piece is informed by a series of workshops carried out last year with immigrant communities around Manchester. Pien says, "Ultimately, Memento celebrates the tangible and intangible, the real and imagined, as well as the potential for transformation".
