Stephen Gately stars in Godspell

Stephen Gatley leads the cast in one of the best-loved musicals of all time.

Godspell is one of the most popular musicals of all time. Telling the story of Jesus' last days on earth, the show boasts a stunning score by Stephen Schwartz (who has recently attracted acclaim for his new show Wicked). Songs such as Day By Day have made Godspell an enduring success since its premiere off-Broadway in 1971.

The musical may tell the same story as Jesus Christ Superstar, Andrew Lloyd Webber's biblical musical which also opened in 1971, but Godspell is an altogether different affair. The first production saw the actors exploring the Gospel of St Matthew in a bleak parking lot, dressed as clowns with a Jesus who bore a red heart painted on his forehead.

Despite the unconventional take, Godspell is a moving and life-affirming show which has become popular with theatre-goers around the world as it explores the things that create a society with passion and integrity.

This production sees Stephen Gately follow up on the success of his role as Joseph in Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat as he performs as Jesus. Gately was a member of Boyzone, one of the most successful boybands of all time, and has since appeared in Dancing on Ice and as a guest on G4's latest album Act Three.
