The Royal Exchange opens its new season on with Henry V...
Henry V is one of Shakespeare’s most popular history plays, telling the story of the young king who, despite his doubts and fears, leads his country into war against the French at the Battle of Agincourt.
The production promises to be an unforgettable start to the theatrical season in Manchester with a captivating performance by rising star Elliot Cowan in the title role, under the guidance of visiting director Jonathan Mumby.
The play has been given a contemporary setting as Mumby believes that Henry V is particularly relevant to today’s audiences.
“The play asks us to confront the brutal realities of going to war: the bloodshed, the loss of life, the loss of humanity", says Mumby. "It also deals with the politics: the propaganda, the spin and the devastating moral effect it has on a country and its people. It asks us to examine how wars are justified by our leaders, and the consequences of unquestioning loyalty… It also sheds light on the loneliness of leadership; how difficult decisions are made; how history books are written; how one person can hold a nation in his hand… Its themes are frighteningly familiar: It is our country, our government and our times.”
With moving steel structures, mud-filled trenches and rainfall, you can be sure that Henry V will be a spectacular and thought-provoking production.
