The ice rink
By AnnMarie Entwistle
The ice rink was very disappointing this year as it felt out of the way and lacked the amount of decoration which we have become accustomed too. The surrounding trees were left bare when normally there is christmas lights in them, the rink itself felt and looked alot smaller. The marshalls as far as I'm aware are there for everyone's welfare but two of them decided it would be a good idea to start speed skating diagonally across the rink, this intern made people feel unsafe and a few people lost there balance, barng in mind there were children as young as 3 years on the rink. The staff in the skate hire were quite pleasant with the exception of one man,who had an attitude problem and he decided to pick and choose who he served and if you passed comment about being there before someone he chose to serve, he would purposely leave you until the last.

ice rink.

I had a similarly bad experience at the hands of the marshalls. I'm 32 and admit i have a bit of a weight problem. However i gamefully tried to join in the activity, gradually building up my confidence until i built up speed. I then completely lost my footing and fell to the ground and watched my glasses slide before me across the rink. I looked for help, only to see the marshalls bent double with laughter and pointing in my direction.

this year's skating

We really enjoyed the rink this year - yes it is smaller and the cafe isnt nearly as good to sit in and watch the world go by (there's not much happening in Spinningfields yet) but it was lovely to have no herras metal fencing. And it is also good that its less crowds, its still very friendly, we talked to lots of other skaters. And the attendants were all very good humoured and helpful. We asked one of them to help us onto the next learning stage and he taught us how to practise going backwards - we got most of the other skaters trying. Brilliant evenings, we will be back several times more! And family tickets are good value. i think it might be an idea to have a kind of 'loyalty card' thing so if you go more than 5 times, it is cheaper??
