Jill Scott

Though Amy Winehouse may have brought attention back to soul music in the UK, a soul revival has been making waves in the US for a decade. Now Manchester Academy will host one of nu-soul's leading artists, Jill Scott.

Jill Scott started her career as a spoken word artist before a collaboration with The Roots, the hit single You Got Me featuring Erykah Badu, launched her musical career. Since then, she has gone on to receive a string of award nominations including 9 Grammy nominations (winning 3) and both Lady of Soul and Soul Train awards.

Her distinctive style blends soul with hip hop, jazz and R'n'B, while her lyrics explore both her life and that of other women with wit and unabashed honesty. In this, she is similar to other nu-soul artists such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Angie Stone.

Her first album, Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol 1, went double platinum in America and subsequent albums have gone gold. Her latest album, The Real Thing, was released in September this year and is a more aggressive and demanding album than previous releases as Scott explores the various roles of women in society.

This is a rare chance to see one of the leading talents of contemporary soul in action.
