Literature Live with Hanif Kureishi at Manchester University 6th March

In Literature

Hanif Kureishi

The author of My Beautiful Laundrette and The Buddha of Suburbia appears at Manchester University to read from his new novel, Something to Tell You.

Many writers only ever produce work in one narrative form. However, Hanif Kureishi has written plays, screenplays and novels throughout his career. His first screenplay, My Beautiful Laundrette, was nominated for an Academy Award and his first novel, The Buddha of Suburbia, won The Whitbread First Novel Award. He has also worked as the Writer in Residence at the famous Royal Court Theatre in London and won many awards for his plays including the George Devine award.

Kureishi often talks in interviews about how important he feels it is for writers to write about subjects they find uncomfortable or difficult, and his work characteristically explores society's reaction to outsiders. Many of his own works have explored race relations in Britain, drawing heavily from Kureishi's experience as a British-born man with an English mother and Pakistani father.

He will appear at Manchester University as part of the Literature Live series in conjunction with the Centre for New Writing.
