Marina Abramovic

MIF

The world's leading performance artist curates a groundbreaking exhibition at Whitworth Art Gallery as part of Manchester International Festival.

Marina Abramovic is often described as 'the grandmother of performance art'. She is best known for her 1974 exhibition Rhythm 0, in which she sat immobile for 6 hours while the public were invited to use any one of 72 objects on her body (varying from objects that could give her pleasure to a whip, knives, thorns and a gun and bullet). Challenging, uncompromising and thought-provoking, she has continued to explore the limits of the body and the power of the mind throughout her career.

Now she will curate a groundbreaking exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery as part of the second Manchester International Festival. The entire gallery will be emptied of all collections, creating a completely blank space in which the audience will experience a series of interventions with some of the world's leading live art performers over four hours.

The show follows on from the iconic Il Tempo Del Postino, one of the highlights of the inaugural Manchester International Festival, and promises to be completely unlike any show ever staged in the UK. Beginning with an hour-long performance by Marina Abramovic herself, other artists include Ivan Civic, Nikhil Chopra, Amanda Coogan, Marie Cool Fabio Balducci, Yingmei Duan, Eunhye Hwang, Jamie Isenstein, Terence Koh, Alastair MacLennan, Kira O'Reilly, Melati Suryodarmo, Nico Vascellari, and Jordan Wolfson.

Tickets are free but booking is essential (visit www.mif.co.uk) and as the show will feature challenging exhibitions and some nudity, it will not be suitable for people under the age of 11.
