Archived: This event was in 2009.
The UK’s most notorious choreographer tours his new masterpiece.
After rising to prominence with his all-male adaptation of Swan Lake, Matthew Bourne has become the UK’s most celebrated choreographers, pulling in audiences from hardened dance enthusiasts to first time audiences. Now he has turned his hand to Oscar Wilde’s classic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.
The production tells the story of a young man who sells his soul to the devil in his pursuit of youth, beauty and debauchery. But as he slides further and further into the moral abyss, a portrait of him in the attic slowly begins to change…
The Picture of Dorian Gray is Bourne’s first original production in three years. Bourne’s new adaptation sets the story in today’s image-obsessed fashion world, drawing timely parralels between Dorian’s desires for and the obsession among today’s celebrities to stay young and beautiful.
Well known for the edgy, sensuous style that defines previous productions such as Edward Scissorhands and The Car Man, this production is Bourne’s darkest dance yet. With a sold out run at both the Edinburgh International Festival and Saddler’s Wells, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a stunning production that will entrance even the newest of dance fans.
