Gershwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is revived by Opera North.
When John P Wintergreen’s presidential campaign flounders, his advisers call a council meeting to decide on a new strategy. In desperation they ask a passing chambermaid what she cares about – and when she answers ‘love’, a strategy is born. They will hold a beauty pageant to find the most beautiful girl in America and Wintergreen will marry her. How could the nation resist? Unfortunately they hadn’t bargained for Wintergreen’s unexpected infatuation with Mary Turner, the plain and sensible girl running the pageant…
When Of Thee I Sing first opened on Broadway in 1931 it immediately won over audiences with its combination of George and Ira Gershwin’s score and George S Kaufman and Maurice Ryskind’s script. It ran for 441 performances and has been revived many times since. As the first musical to ever win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the quality of this show is assured and with Opera North’s track record for fantastic productions, this is certain to be a great afternoon’s entertainment.
