The Library Theatre will start its new season with Noel Coward’s celebrated comedy, Private Lives...
Amanda and Victor Prynne, a newlywed couple, arrive at the prestigious French resort of Deauville to celebrate their honeymoon. But when Amanda bumps into Elyot Chase, her ex-husband, as he celebrates his marriage to new wife Sibyl, the pair must choose between placid contentment and fiery, exhiliarating passion.
Chris Honer, who will direct the play, believes that Private Lives is still relevant to today’s audiences. “It’s a modern classic,” he says. “It’s a brilliant depiction of a very contemporary relationship about two people as equally in love with each other as they are at each other’s throats.”
Despite the fact that Private Lives was written over seventy years ago, it continues to be one of the most popular plays Coward ever wrote. Perhaps one of the reasons for this is because the subject of remarriage and the mixed feelings it can bring continues to be relevant to modern audiences.
With an experienced cast (starring Philippa Peak as Amanda and James Wallace as Elyot) and Coward’s customary biting wit, Private Lives promises to be a very entertaining show.
