Angela Carter's adaptation of the classic fairy tale about the cat who helps his master become rich is a gothic, subversive Christmas treat.
The story of Puss in Boots has appeared in cultures across the world for centuries, but Angela Carter's retelling gives the story a whole new lease of life. Carter is well known for her darkly feminist retellings of fairy tales along with a huge body of work spanning novels, poetry, children's fiction, short stories, journalism and academic writing. She also wrote the screenplay for Neil Jordan's In The Company of Wolves.
In this adaptation, the story is set in the Italian city of Bergamo, where a band of travelling players tell a commedia d'ell arte story in which heroes can be less than heroic, heroines are nowhere near as sweet as they seem and the evil villan might just win the day after all...
The show is directed by Liz Postlethwaite, the Library Theatre Company's Community and Education director, and performed by Norfox Young People's Theatre who performed Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida to a warm reception at the Library Theatre this summer.
Performances take place at Zion Arts Centre (Hulme) and tickets cost £5 / £3 (concessions)
