Skin Deep

Opera North unveil a brand new operetta for our times.

In his Alpine clinic, Dr Needlemeier, plastic surgeon par excellence, has built his life around putting right what Nature gets wrong. He’s a busy man. Celebrities, his wife and his lover are all clamouring for the caress of his scalpel. Even his daughter is eager for him to tackle her boyfriend’s tackle… But Dr Needlemeier has his sights set on a bigger prize. He is one ingredient away from creating an elixir of eternal youth and only Luke Pollock, Hollywood’s biggest star, can give him what he needs. But when Dr Needlemeier gets his surgically gloved hands on Luke Pollock, things go suddenly and horribly wrong…

Opera North’s brand new satirical operetta is a collaboration between some of the world of opera’s leading names: Komische Opera, Bregenzer Festspiele and Royal Danish Opera. The libretto is written by Armando Iannucci, the man behind Knowing Me, Knowing You… I’m Alan Partridge and The Thick of It, while the score is conducted by Richard Farnes fresh from the critical success of Opera North’s standout production of Peter Grimes.

This production will visit The Lowry fresh from its world premiere in Leeds. Hilarious, racy, and with more satirical bite than Rory Bremner in a bath of piranhas, Skin Deep is a must-see show.
