Award- winning chorographer Rafael Bonachela teams up with double Bafta winner and five times Grammy nominee Marius de Vries in his new production Square Map of Q4.
Rafael Bonachela has worked with some of the biggest companies in the business, from The Rambert to Kylie's Fever Tour, but it is with the universally praised Bonachela Dance Company that his talents are best reflected. The company launched in 2006 with Voices and has since been nominated for the 2007 National Dance Awards Critics’ Circle: Company Prize for Outstanding Repertoire (Modern) and recently became Associate Company with Dance East.
His latest creation, Square Map of Q4, sees the company explore the way early conscious memories can shape personality and temperament.
Famed for his clever collaborations and spot-on mix of popular art and culture, Bonachela’s reputation as an important choreographer continues to grow. Winner of the prestigious Place Prize in 2004 and recent choreographer for Jude Kelly’s Royal Festival Hall production of Carmen Jones, he moves seamlessly between the mainstream and avant garde dance works.
Bonachela explains “My work is open to individual interpretation. It’s not about having an opinion and telling people what to think. I aim to create a work that is challenging to the dancer and the audience and makes them feel and think.”
Square Map of Q4 sees Bonachela continuing his collaboration with celebrated production designer Alan Macdonald (films include Love Is The Devil, The Queen) and, for the first time, with double BAFTA winner and five-time Grammy nominee composer Marius de Vries (Madonna, Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, Bjork, Massive Attack, Rufus Wainwright). Costumes are by the ex-Central St Martin’s cutting edge design duo Meadham Kirchhoff and lighting design is by Guy Hoare who divides his in-demand time between dance, opera and theatre.
