Birmingham Royal Ballet concludes their Manchester visit with this richly comic tale of love across the centuries.
Birmingham Royal Ballet is the UK’s leading touring classical ballet company, internationally renowned for their elegant and intelligent dance under the guidance of artistic director David Bintley. Now audiences in Manchester can experience two stunning shows from the company shown over five consecutive nights at The Lowry.
After the conclusion of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s first show, Pomp and Circumstances, the troupe’s attention turns to Sylvia. This classical ballet, set to music by Delibes (composer of the more famous Coppelia), takes the audience on a journey through time to learn valuable lessons about love.
Count Guccioli and his wife are throwing a lavish party to celebrate their wedding anniversary, but it looks as though the celebrations will be ruined as the Count’s infidelities are revealed. The disruption threatens the growing love between two of the Count’s servants, Sylvia and Amyntas. Eros, the God of Love (cunningly disguised as a gardener) takes pity on the couple and whisks them away on a journey to mythical Rome, where they will learn the true meaning of love…
David Bintley’s trademark comic energy suffuses this classical ballet, making it a joyful celebration of love illustrated by gods, goddesses, pirates and slave girls.
