Matthew Bourne's celebrated retelling of Carmen returns to The Lowry.
When The Car Man opened in 2000, it received rapturous reviews across the national press, finally winning the Evening Standard Award for 'Musical Event of the Year'. Seven years after its premiere, Matthew Bourne is taking his erotic thriller back on tour around the country.
The retelling sees Bizet's famous score set down in a dusty, tired, midwestern American town. When smouldering drifter Luca arrives in town he is immediately drawn to Lana, the wife of the local diner/garage owner. He seduces her and they begin a fiery affair. Not satisfied, he goes on to seduce sexually confused mechanic Angelo. Soon, driven by desire and the rising heat, the town's inhabitants are drawn into a spiral of lust, greed, betrayal and revenge...
Matthew Bourne is well-known for his imaginitive choreography. In 1995 he astounded the dance world with his all-male production of Swan Lake, which has gone on to be one of the most popular ballets of our generation. He has won numerous awards for Swan Lake, Nutcracker! and many other productions and has seen both his first company Adventures in Motion Pictures and new company New Adventures go on to become world-renowned for their spectacular shows.
The Car Man is a steamy, sexy, dangerous show merging ballet, modern dance, performance art and Bizet's highly-charged score. You won't have seen dance to equal this in Manchester for a long time - book early.
