Gluhwein, bratwurst, wooden toys and the singing reindeer - you know Christmas is on the way when the European Christmas Markets arrive in town.
Over the last nine years, Manchester's Christmas markets have become some of the biggest and most popular in Europe. The combination of distinctive wooden chalets, one-off gifts and the huge variety of Christmas food on offer tempts visitors from all over the northwest, while the beer tents and Gluhwein stalls are a popular meeting place for office workers to meet friends at the end of a long and busy day.
The markets are split over five different locations. The main market is held in Albert Square and includes a living pine tree forest and the Alpine House, which is the home to a multi-lingual singing reindeer. The second largest market is five minutes walk away in St Anne's Square and is well-known for its superb selection of traditional wooden toys. Linking these two are smaller markets in Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street and Brazennose Street.
