The Two Cities Boat Race at Salford Quays on 10th May
In Sports
Archived: This event was in 2008.
Talented rowers from the universities of Manchester and Salford are preparing to lock oars along the River Irwell.
The first Two Cities Boat Race took place on 26th February 1972, and hundreds of spectators gathered on the city centre bridges to watch the event between The University of Manchester and The University of Salford. Over 30 years on, and the modern Two Cities Boat Race is now recognised as one of the top events in the region's sporting calendar. The race is watched by thousands of cheering spectators annually at Salford Quays and is viewed as the Northern equivalent of the Oxbridge race.
Veronica Wood, Manchester's Boat Club President said, "The Two Cities Boat Race gives us the chance to demonstrate our commitment and passion. It's all about dedication, hard work and fitness, and we've been training hard all year for this event. We're quietly confident!"
Rhys Kearney, Salford's Boat Club President added, "The Two Cities Boat Race is a great chance for us to show how far we've come since we first started rowing! We're looking forward to crossing the finishing line a few lengths ahead of Manchester! This it's revenge!"
More than a high profile sporting event, the Two Cities Boat Race is a fun day for everybody, beginning with the spectacle of Dragon Boat racing and a festive atmosphere along the Quayside with food, drink and live entertainment.
