The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain At The Lowry 4th - 5th December
In Concerts
Archived: This event was in 2008.
The most unlikely cult orchestra in the country rolls up for a two-night appearance at The Lowry.
There are some musical groups that you don't expect to encounter - the Kazoo Chamber Group, for example, or the Royal Ocarina Quartet. However, you are likely to encounter the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain in more places than you might think. Glastonbury, for example. Later with Jools Holland. BBC's Electric Proms. Or perhaps at one of their sell-out concerts around the UK, America, Canada, or even Japan.
Somehow this 'rag-taggle bunch of misfits' have struck a chord with audiences around the world, delighting them with their arrangements of songs like Shaft, Smells Like Teen Spirit and Miss Dynamitee mixed in with the odd bit of Tchaikovsky, a sprinkling of fifties rock and roll and a smattering of skat.
They are now set to bring their unique brand of entertainment to The Lowry with two shows at the start of December. George Formby may well be turning in his grave - but you’ll be hard pressed to find a more original concert this winter.
