West Side Story

Phenomenal demand brings West Side Story back to The Lowry this summer.

When West Side Story showed at The Lowry in 2008, it earned itself both a fully sold-out run and the Best Musical Award at the 2008 MEN Theatre Awards. It went on to win awards for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Musical Revival at the What’s On Stage Theatregoers Choice Awards.

When all-American boy Tony falls in love with Maria, a beautiful Puerto Rican girl, everything should be beautiful. But this is Hell’s Kitchen, New York, and tensions are high between Tommy’s gang, The Jets, and Puerto Rican rivals The Sharks…

West Side Story’s enduring success is a testament to the impact the show has had on musical theatre. A collaboration between composer Leonard Bernstein, lyricist Stephen Sondheim, playwright Arthur Laurents and choreographer Jerome Robbins, this modern interpretation of Romeo and Juliet still strikes a chord with audiences. Not only does the show boast songs such as Tonight, Maria, Somewhere, I Feel Pretty and America, but it also continues to make relevant points about the tensions between immigrants and the communities they move into.

The Observer recommends that ‘if you buy one theatre ticket this summer, make it this one,’ and we couldn’t agree more. But with such high demand for tickets, we suggest that you act fast!
